Update: Marcus Titus has been talking with USA swimming and hand signals will be used for his race starts. However, he is pushing that they be used for ALL heats and ALL events. That way the referees will be well practiced and the hand signals will be a natural part of the start protocol. Marcus Titus is still waiting for this confirmation from USA swimming. As you all know I am Deaf and in the world of swimming rely on hand-signals and strobe lights for „ready,“ „take your mark,“ and „go.“ I’ve been working with USA swimming to modify their standard race starts to incorporate hand signals for athletes who are Deaf and hearing impaired. Just when I thought we were about to make a major breakthrough, USA swimming told me that they will not use any hand signals at the upcoming Olympic Trials because it is not part of the FINA protocol used at the Olympics. They have no guarantee that I will receive any visual signals for my race starts. This is an outrage and a complete slap in the face. Please help me protest this decision. The more attention I can bring to this issue, the more pressure I can apply to USA swimming to change their decision. The trials are in June and time is running out. Spread the word – this type of discrimination should not be happening. If anything, USA swimming should be setting an example and leading the way to make a universal starting system for all athletes around the world!

in diesem Jahr finden die Höhepunkte in GB statt: die Olympischen Spiele 2012 in London. Zur Zeit bereiten sich neben normalhörenden Schwimmern auch einige der gehörlosen Schwimmer für ihre Teilnahme an diese unvergesslichen Spielen vor.
Unter anderem ein US Deaf-Schwimmer Marcus Titus. Leider hat er eine schlechte Nachricht bekommen, dass bei dem Qualifikationswettkampf („Olympic Trials“) keine Starthilfe vorgesehen ist bzw. auf dem Programm ist, d.h. er startet praktisch ohne Starthilfe und daher mit einer extrem viel grossen Verzögerung ins Rennen!! Handzeichen ist laut FINA-Regelung nicht erlaubt und Lichtsignal kann nicht immer eingesetzt werden (evtl. aus Kostengründen oder organisatorischem Aufwand). Das wollen wir als Deaf-Schwimmer nicht akzeptieren! Das ist ein böser Nachteil für die Athleten mit Behinderung, die sich für was Grosses vorbereiten!!
